February was a busy and fruitful month for the ALT Network! On 4th February, we had our first meetup in Nairobi, Kenya meeting new and existing members of the Network for a discussion on the opportunities for lawyers to develop new clients in the tech sector and for tech companies exploring a new market in the legal sector. Thanks to all of you who attended #ALTNairobi. Next step on the journey was Kampala where the first ALT Network legal tech hackathon took place on February 6th. Seven hackers presented their innovations to a team of lawyers for feedback and assistance with developing them further. Great work by the diligent ALT Uganda membership for initiating the hackathon. Congratulations to Veritas Interactive whose practice management software ThemisNode came out on top with two runners-up to enter the final hackathon on March 5th at the ALT LegalTech conference in Kampala.
Onwards to Kigali, Rwanda for the Africa Tech Summit 13-15 February where we partnered with AppsAfrica to hold three sessions on the intersection of law and technology. Members of the ALT Network from Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda were on panels in all the sessions covering topics including ‘Data protection and cybersecurity issues for the tech sector in Africa’; ‘Regulating for growth: Providing the appropriate legislative framework for tech disruption in Africa’ and ‘Opportunities for innovation & collaboration for growth: technology and legal services in Africa’. We look forward to partnering again with Africa Tech Summit for ATSLondon in June.
